Etymology: Pseudotropheus: Greek, pseudes = false + Greek, tropaion = defeat, a memorial of a fighting war, trophy; because of their specialized teeth were such an obvious feeding adaptation (Ref. 45335); likomae: 'likomae' i.e., named after Likoma Island (Ref. 132456).

Dorsal spines (total): 17 - 18; Dorsal soft rays (total): 8 - 9; Anal spines: 3; Anal soft rays: 7 - 8. This species is distinguished by the following characters: with a large number of small scales on the nape and chest region, an abrupt transition from large flank scales to small chest scales; a true ocelli; basic melanin pattern consisting of 5-7 bars (5 or fewer beneath dorsal fin) and two horizontal stripes; juveniles with the horizontal stripes only vaguely or not at all, those that lack the horizontal elements has shallower body depth 30.4-33.4%SL; mature individuals with a mid-lateral and a dorso-lateral stripe (Ref. 132456).
