Etymology: Chiloglanis: Greek, cheilos = lip + Greek, glanis = a fish that can eat the bait without touching the hook; a cat fish (Ref. 45335).
Environment: milieu / climate zone / depth range / distribution range
Freshwater; benthopelagic; pH range: 6.0 - 7.5; dH range: ? - 15. Tropical; 20°C - 26°C (Ref. 2059); 10°S - 19°S
Africa: Limpopo River system, Cunene, Kafue, Zambezi (above and below Victoria Falls), Okavango, Lake Malawi and Lake Kariba (Ref. 3202). Presence in the upper Congo River basin in Zambia (Ref. 3202) is unconfirmed (Ref. 52193) and questionable. Also reported from the Pungwe and Buzi systems and east coast rivers in Tanzania (Ref. 7248). Several undetermined Chiloglanis populations from East and Central as well as South Africa have been assigned to this species, although it is only inadequately known; also Rufiji/Ruaha specimens are not conspecific (Ref. 78218).
