背的軟條 (總數) : 11 - 12; 臀鰭軟條: 20 - 21; 脊椎骨: 33. Distinguished from all other species of the genus in having the following characters: top of the head flat; dentary with six or seven slight unicuspid teeth; a dark lateral band extending from posterior edge of the usually diffuse humeral spot to the base of caudal fin, and that widens and strengthens in intensity posteriorly at point beneath dorsal fin origin; and five supraneural bones without cartilage on either upper or lower edges and without cartilage on all structures (Ref. 77139).

An omnivorous fish which feeds on aquatic insects, snails, seeds and aquatic plants (Ref. 77139).
